France honors Dustin Hoffman in Paris ceremony

In an elaborate event in a gilded hall, Culture Minister Christine Albanel made the two-time Oscar winner an honorary commander in France's National Order of Arts and Letters and tied a green medallion around the 71-year-old actor's neck.

Hoffman's eyes moistened, and after taking a second to regain his composure, he joked: "When you get to my age, you cry at the weather reports."

On a more serious note, he told The Associated Press he was "as satisfied as you can be when you wake up in the morning and say, 'that's the best dream I've ever had.'" He attended the ceremony with his wife, Lisa Gottsegen.

Albanel called Hoffman "one of the greatest actors of our time", paying tribute to his Oscar-winning performances as a workaholic father in the 1979 movie "Kramer vs.

Ill. governor: Burris should resign from US Senate

Roland Burris says he is still working on a document that will prove the Illinois Democrat didn't lie about the circumstances of his appointment to the Senate.

Burris said last week he'd release "a concise document" about his testimony to the legislative panel that recommended former Gov.

Burris testified last month that he had no contact with key Blagojevich staffers and offered nothing in return for the appointment to President Barack Obama's former Senate seat.

Burris later said he did speak to several Blagojevich advisers and tried to raise money for Blagojevich.

Train line blocked in rail union stand-off

A stand-off between warring factions of the state's rail union last night saw a Belgrave line train stopped, blocking the path of other trains, for five hours on platform two at Flinders Street Station.

Train drivers and train controllers - the two belong to separate factions of the - were last night locked in an argument over the train, which was to run on the Belgrave/Lilydale line.

In dispute is how faults on trains are reported; train drivers want to change the system of fault reporting to give them more power, while train controllers want to keep the status quo.

Connex and the Rail, Tram and Bus Union are appearing tomorrow before the Australian Industrial Relations Committee, in a bid to sort the dispute.
